What is Addiction ?
In simple terms, ‘’Addiction’’ is a disorder that constantly manifests in the brain. It links ‘’rewards’’ with motivation and memory. The constant craving for a specific feeling or action will be linked to a pleasurable or positive experience. A person with and addiction will find their everyday routines severely disrupted. Then, there will be periods of remission and relapse, cycling between moderate and extreme cravings. These ‘’loops’’ or cycles can affect a person for extended periods of their life, potentially causing severe health and financial problems. Research suggests that around one third of the global population has an addiction problem of some kind, from gambling to exercise and other activities. However, most people associate ‘’addiction’’ with drug and alcohol misuse. According to government figures, the UK Saw 270,705 adults officially seek treatment from this form of addiction between April 2019 and March 2020, and those are only the reported cases. Drugs and alcohol abuse is often highlighted in the UK media, and some people with drug addiction can also show alcoholic tendencies.
